“Uswatun hasanah” is an Arabic term meaning “a beautiful example” or “an excellent model.” This phrase is used in the Quran to describe the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, highlighting his exemplary character and conduct as a perfect role model for humanity. Allah s.w.t. said in Surah Al-Ahzab, verse 21:
Which means: Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever has hope in Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah often.
This verse underscores the Prophet’s role as the ideal example for all aspects of life. His character and actions provide a comprehensive guide for our personal lives, social interactions, and spiritual practices. We should therefore strive to follow in his footsteps and learn more about him. We can achieve this through reading the books of hadith, learning and appreciating the life journey of our Prophet ﷺ or even by watching educational videos about him.
Additionally, we should also engage in regular reflection and self-assessment, ensuring that our actions align with the values and teachings of the Prophet ﷺ. Among the perfect examples of the Prophet’s exemplary character is his unwavering commitment to kindness and compassion, even in times of distress.
One notable story that highlights this aspect of his character is the incident of Ta’if. After facing intense persecution in Mecca, the Prophet ﷺ traveled to the nearby town of Ta’if to seek support. Instead of receiving a warm welcome, he was met with hostility and violence.
The people of Ta’if mocked him and pelted him with stones, causing him great physical and emotional pain. Despite this harsh treatment, the Prophet ﷺ responded not with anger or vengeance but with a prayer for their guidance. He ﷺ said, “O Allah, guide my people, for they do not know.” This response exemplifies his remarkable patience and compassion, even towards those who wronged him.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ reminded us in two of his hadith of the importance of having good character. He said:
In this life, we will surely face personal or professional challenges, such as dealing with difficult family dynamics or navigating conflicting opinions.
For example, if we are in a situation in which a family member disagrees with a decision we’ve made. Instead of reacting with anger or defensiveness, we should try our best to respond with calmness and empathy, actively listening to their concerns and seeking to understand their perspective.
By engaging in a respectful and open dialogue, we demonstrate patience and a willingness to find common ground, fostering stronger familial bonds and resolving conflicts amicably.
This approach not only reflects good character but also promotes harmony and mutual respect within the family. Through such interactions, we can embody the virtues of the Prophet ﷺ, creating a more supportive and compassionate environment in our personal relationships.
In conclusion, we should strive to practice empathy, patience, and understanding in our daily interactions, so that we are align with the perfect character and example of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Lastly, Prophet ﷺ also taught us a prayer that could help us attain good character.
Which means: “O Allah, please guide me towards deeds that are good, and a character that is good. There is no one who can guide me towards goodness, other than You.” (Hadith narrated by Imam al-Nasa’i)
May Allah s.w.t. grant us the strength to always follow in the footsteps of our beloved.
