Creating an inclusive environment in your local mosque is crucial for fostering a sense of belonging and ensuring that everyone, regardless of their needs, feels welcome. Here are five effective ways to promote inclusivity within your mosque, supported by the teachings of Islam:
Accessibility is a fundamental aspect of inclusivity. Evaluate your mosque’s physical space to ensure it is welcoming to individuals with mobility challenges.

This includes having ramps or elevators where necessary, clear signage, and accessible restrooms. Consider also the needs of elderly members by providing ample seating and ensuring that prayer spaces are easily navigable.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized compassion and care for all members of the community. He said, “Allah does not look at your bodies or your appearances, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds” – Sahih Muslim
This Hadith reminds us that our focus should be on the well-being and needs of every individual.
For visually impaired members, having access to religious texts in accessible formats is essential. Make sure your mosque provides Braille Qurans and large print copies of the Quran for those who need them.
This not only demonstrates sensitivity to the needs of visually impaired individuals but also ensures that everyone has the opportunity to engage fully with the Quranic teachings.

“And We have certainly made the Quran easy to remember. But is there anyone who will remember?” – Surah Al-Qamar, Verse 40

This could also be useful for new reverts who are still learning about the religion. By offering diverse programming, you can cater to the varied needs of your congregation and encourage broader participation.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged the pursuit of knowledge and understanding in different forms, as seen in his saying: “Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim” – Sunan Ibn Majah

For example, during my visit to Taipei Grand Mosque, the Friday sermon was delivered in English as well as Mandarin. This ensures that non-Arabic speakers or those who speak different dialects can fully participate in mosque activities.
The Quran acknowledges linguistic diversity as a sign of Allah’s creation:
“And among His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the diversity of your languages and colors. Indeed, in that are signs for those who know” – Surah Ar-Rum, Verse 22
